“How...nice.” Collins turned the wrapped box around in his hands.

“What’s that?” Setsuna said, grabbing her glass of water.

“One of my students gave me a gift. It’s finals week you know,” he said, smiling.

“Ah.” Setsuna nodded. “And this one... did you give them a bad grade or something?”

“Being that I never hear this particular student offer up any information on the subjects I teach, I wouldn’t really know. She’s done pretty well on her other stuff.”

“I see,” Setsuna murmured and tapped her fingers on her glass. “Maybe she just feels grateful to you.”
“Let’s see what the hell this thing is then, huh?” Collins ripped open the wrapping paper. “A coffee mug. How...”

“Practical?”

“I was about to say a little too goddamn traditional, but- Oh, God.” Collins sighed as he opened up the actual box. “It’s a novelty coffee mug. Damn it.” Collins set down the dark blue mug on the table in front of them. It looked like a normal coffee mug, but the one side with emblazoned with the motto, “It is hard to soar with eagles when you’re surrounded by turkeys!”

Well, Setsuna found it a little humorous, but in Collins’s eyes, then she could see why he’d be so upset about.

“I’m gonna give that girl a C,” Collins muttered, shaking his head, “Actually, I think a D can qualify for bribery.”

“I don’t think that’s what she meant by it, Collins."

20. Title: Island Nights
Author: no_retreat
Theme: Memories
Genre: General
Fandoms: Sailor Moon, Lost
Version: PGSM
Rating: PG

(Man of Science, Man of Faith)

Makoto couldn’t sleep. It had been a long day for just about everyone here, what with moving up to the caves for the next couple of nights or so. Not to mention Shannon had been freaking out about seeing Michael’s kid in the jungle, which had made everyone jumpy. Then again, Makoto felt that the girl hadn’t been right since her brother died.

It was these sorts of nights (which, amazingly, had happened quite frequently on the island) that she couldn’t help feeling out of place. But that wasn’t anything new. After all, she had been the one out of place. The tall girl. The fighter.

Usagi wouldn’t feel out of place here. She would be like Hurley, in a way- always trying to help people out, making friends, make people feel good. Yeah, she’d be scared, but she would look at the bright side of things. “At least we have each other, right, Mako-chan?”

Yeah. That’s what she would say to her right now.

“Hey.”

Makoto broke out of her thoughts. “Charlie. Shouldn’t you be with Claire?”

He waved her off. “I’ve got my eye on her. Watcha doin’ out here?”

“Just thinking.”

21. Title: Happy New Year
Author: no_retreat
Theme: Celebration
Genre: General
Fandoms: Sailor Moon
Version: Manga
Rating: PG

“We’re not locked out this year?” Maureen threw her coat in the corner of the loft. “Wow. Benny must’ve had a good Christmas.”

“Yeah, because we finally paid up,” Roger said, digging his hand into a bowl of pretzels.

“Hey!” Setsuna slapped him across the head. “You have me to thank for that too.”

“Yeah, thanks, Sets,” he muttered.

“December 31st, 11.45 pm- we’re fifteen minutes away from another year,” Mark wound up his camera.

“Mark, put that thing away,” Setusna said, grabbing the bottle of champagne. “It’s New Year’s.” This was certainly an interesting party for Setsuna, to say the least. Her duties as Keeper of the Gates of Time never really allowed her to understand the celebration of time passing. And although she generally enjoyed the New Year’s activities of Japan, she never saw a celebration like she had here. But she knew that they all had reason to celebrate.

“Sets!” Maureen plopped herself down next to Setsuna. “So, any New Year’s resolutions?”

“No, not really.”

“Oh, come on.” She playfully hit Setsuna on the arm. “Ya gotta have something that you want to change.”

“Okay, Maureen, that’s enough.” Mark cut in between the two women. “If she doesn’t have one, she doesn’t have one.”

“Oh, and what’s yours? Leaving that thing alone for ten minutes?”

Mark blushed. “Maureen, come on.”

Setsuna nudged Mark. “Hey. Happy New Year’s.”

“We’ve got five more minutes,” Mark said, laughing.

“I know. Just felt like saying it.”
